Government is failing our children
Graham Allen, MP for Nottingham North, said: “Early Intervention to give our kids the best start is the basis of all their future development. Recently obtained stats show that over 1 in 5 of the designated Sure Start centres in the East Midlands have lost that status or been closed since 2010. The creation of these centres and the support they can provide our local families with is invaluable in making sure everyone gets a good start in life. They offer parenting support, childcare, and even job training for parents.
Government cuts since 2010 have stopped families getting this valuable support and it’s shocking to hear the terrible effect this can have. According to the 4Children charity, 4 out of 5 parents said that being unable to use their local Children’s Centre would make life harder for them and their families, and more than 1 in 3 said it would make a “big difference”. For vulnerable families in deprived areas like my patch this can often be the difference between a life of poverty and the ability to set your own path. That’s why these centres are so important.
Luckily for us here in Nottingham we have a council who are willing to stand up for families by maintaining these vital services, so we can give children the support they deserve, help parents back to work and create a Britain in which each of us can lead richer lives. We will continue to fight Central govt cuts like this which stop help getting to those who really need it, and when in Government Labour will give these centres the protection they need.”
A city council spokesperson added: “Despite huge and unfair cuts in Government grant, Nottingham City Council has maintained the number of Children’s Centres at 18 since 2009. Some savings within the Children’s Centres budget have had to be made by, for example, closer working with schools or in some cases through some changes in opening times. However, these savings have been made so that key services and support can still be maintained and delivered to local communities”.
