Nottingham-born William 'Bendigo' Thompson (1811-1880) was the undefeated Champion Prize Fighter Of All England between 1839 and his retirement in 1850. Below is a poem written by Sherlock Holmes author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about him titled "Bendigo's Sermon":

You didn't know of Bendigo?

Well that knocks me out!

Who's your board schoolteacher?

What's he been about?

Chock a block with fairy tales;

Full of useless cram,

And never heard of Bendigo

The Pride Of Nottingham.
