“We are going to have to help ourselves” says Graham
“Yet again, the Government speaks of getting people into work, but in reality, we find ourselves in the same situation, month in, month out. That’s why we are rolling up our sleeves locally. The latest example of this was on Friday, as part of the Nottingham Works £6.9M programme Nottm North will get it’s fair share but also get an exclusive package dedicated to getting 69 young people aged 18-24 into month long traineeships and paid £120 per week, with employers getting £450 in costs to get them ready for work ” said Graham
Nottingham North constituency still has one of the highest jobless figures in the country, ranking 17th out of 650. This means that 2,655 people (or 6% of the population) are currently out of work. The area also includes the three wards with the highest unemployment across the city, these being Aspley, Bulwell and Bestwood.
Local Labour MP, Graham Allen said: “These figures highlight the enduring fact that Central government is doing little to help us. Despite all their talk of a “Long term economic plan” that plan does not seem to apply to areas like ours.
Instead, we have to take a more localised approach. The team at my charity, Rebalancing the Outer Estates, has been working flat out to try and bring more jobs to the patch. We have recently held two successful day events, one focusing on seeing ability, not disability in those with long term health issues and secondly a repeat of our successful Jobs Fair last year which saw nearly 150 people find jobs.
I hope that have been able to replicate that success this year. We are going to have to help ourselves out of this situation, because frankly, the government are not going to.
