Unemployment double the national average in Nottingham North

“Yet again, my constituency of Nottingham North has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. We are going to have to help ourselves, as the Conservative Government are not going to” said Graham Allen MP

The unemployment rate in Nottingham North is 5.7%, over double the national average of 2.4%. This comes despite a fall in numbers nationally. 2,510 people are still out of work, 620 of whom are aged 18-24. This gives Nottingham North the 19th highest unemployment rate in the country.

On a city level, Aspley, Bulwell and Bestwood are the top three areas with the highest amount of jobless and this has consistently been the case.

Local MP Graham Allen said: “Month in, month out, these figures show that Nottingham North is being left behind. The Tories say that the country is recovering, however this is simply not the case in Nottingham North where the reality is that people are still struggling to get by in places like Aspley and Bestwood. Central government cuts mean the Council is forced to sell scarce land assets not for regeneration but to build yet more houses for people with no local job or training to go to in an already unbalanced Nottm North economy.

The Government should do more to help folks get back to work, especially our young people. Locally, the City Council and its partners are doing their best, through the Rebalancing the Outer Estates Charity we are helping to tackle this problem at its root by equipping people with the skills they need to get a job and support themselves. Plus the rebuilt Basford Hall FE College is providing opportunities whereas this overcentralised Government seem determined to hold people back. We must work together to help create jobs and bring some prosperity to the outer estates.”
