Graham calls on residents to look out for Cold Weather Payments

Nottingham North MP Graham Allen is calling on residents to look out for Cold Weather Payments (CWPs) when the weather is particularly cold.

The Government have set up a scheme which will see people who claim certain benefits will automatically receive a payment of £25 for each 7 days that is classified as cold between November and March each year.

Labour is in favour of the CWPs, however more should be done to protect vulnerable people from rip off bills, and to end the scandal of cold homes by making investment in home insulation a national infrastructure priority. Each home insulated means hundreds of pounds of that household’s bill. Yet George Osborne has cut the number of homes being insulated by almost 80%.

Graham said: “These payments will help pay for heating bills and other ways which people can keep warm in the cold of winter”.

“Sadly, the ONS estimated 68 people per constituency died last winter from the cold weather. My patch is particularly vulnerable as it is one of the most deprived areas in the country, meaning people will have to choose between heating and eating this winter given that millions of homes are still without insulation and the high cost of utility bills.”

“These payments will go some way in helping, however the Government should be looking into expanding this vital scheme so that it helps more vulnerable people. One way could be to loosen the conditions needed for a payment to be made or to make more people eligible for the payment. I hope the Government will look into these measures to ensure people keep warm this winter”.
