Local MP Graham Allen kicked off National Bookstart week with local babies and toddlers at Totstimes, at the Bulwell Riverside on the 7th June. National Bookstart Week is an annual celebration of Bookstart, the flagship reading programme from national charity, Booktrust. Bookstart aims to help every child in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to develop a lifelong love of reading that will give them a flying start in life through gifting free books to every child. This year’s week runs from 9 – 15 June and will see millions of families across the UK coming together to discover stories, rhymes and reading.

Totstimes with rhymes, singing and stories for babies and toddlers take place every Monday 10.30-11am with support from Bulwell Children's Centre and every other Saturday 11-11.30am. The Bookstart Bear Club is promoted at every session with children awarded their certificates at Totstimes.

Graham says: ‘All the research shows that reading together strengthens family bonds and helps children do better at school, whatever the family’s background. You don’t have to be a great reader yourself to share a story with your children – often you just need to let the pictures carry you both along.’

‘As a champion of Early Intervention, I understand how important it is for mums and dads to spend quality time reading to their babies, toddlers and children. It is a vital way to build the social and emotional skills that will make our kids life-ready.”

The fun-filled event will also include rhymes, storytelling and other activities which encourage children and their parents and carers to enjoy songs, rhymes, rhythm and movement together. Totstime in Bulwell on Saturday 7th June will be the start of a week of activities across the city of Nottingham to celebrate National Bookstart Week.
