UNSC Resolution 2334 on Israel and Palestine February 2017

Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2334. I have been copied in on several emails that constituents have sent to the Prime Minister about UN Security Council Resolution 2334 and the related campaign by the Israel Britain Alliance.

I share the frustration and disappointment expressed by many at the lack of progress on the Middle East peace process. I believe that a two-state solution that recognises the importance of security and stability, and that guarantees a viable and secure future for both Israelis and Palestinians, must remain the goal of the international community.

I realise this issue covers areas that are sensitive and complex. Israel and Palestine relations have always had a difficult path as there is no easy way to create an answer that satisfies all parties. Indeed, a report by the Middle East Quartet last summer expressed that continuing on the current course will make the prospect of two states living side by side in peace and security "increasingly remote". It is therefore essential that the United Kingdom continues to support dialogue and fully backs all initiatives to keep the two-state solution alive. United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2334 order received a unanimous vote in the UN, demonstrating that many state powers believe most strongly that this resolution has the capabilities of creating the best compromise and solution to its current state.

The UK supported UN Security Council Resolution 2334 on 23rd December 2016. The British Ambassador to the United Nations described the resolution as "a clear reinforcement" that a two-state solution remains the only viable route to a sustained peace. As you are aware, the resolution reaffirmed that the establishment by Israel of settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is illegal. The recent announcement of 3,000 new settlement units in the West Bank undermines still further the prospect of a two-state solution to this conflict.

UN Security Council Resolution 2334 calls for immediate steps to prevent all acts of violence against civilians, including acts of terror, as well as all acts of provocation. The resolution calls on all parties to observe calm and restraint, and to refrain from provocative actions, incitement and inflammatory rhetoric. As such, I believe the Palestinian Authority must act decisively and take all steps within its capacity to stop incitement to violence and strengthen ongoing efforts to combat terrorism.

I know from the many letters and e-mails I receive that there are strong views on this matter, and I can assure you that I will bear in mind the points you raise.

Thank you for taking the time to reach out to me regarding this issue.
